intersections between divided highways

Is there any prefered method of creating intersections between 2 divided highways?

the 2 methods I can think of are:
To create a “square” between the 4 traffic paths
To merge all traffic paths to a single point and create a normal intersection

Any ideas appreciated

The first option is generally used, afaik.
