Incorrect Caspian Sea Nautical Boundaries

The Caspian Sea maritime boundaries are incorrectly mapped to 12nm. They should be at 15nm. Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea - Wikipedia

According to the changeset comments the current boundaries come from Marine Regions, which provides 12nm boundaries. This is the standard value for the UN law of the sea but does not apply to the Caspian “Sea”.

As OSM is a “do-ocaracy” it’s kinda up to you to do something about it. You’d have to start by trying to find out if the baselines they have agreed on are publicly available.

Seems to be already 15 NM OpenStreetMap

JOSM tells me from Node: 9186913608 | OpenStreetMap to Node: 4073996784 | OpenStreetMap is 11.95 NM

I mostly map on OHM and don’t want to spend the time correcting something like that on OSM. I just want to inform the community that it is wrong.

Unless the Caspian has receded by 3nm since 2018, it’s not.

Anyways, so now that I’ve informed all of you that it is wrong, I’ll just say goodbye and get back to mapping nautical boundary history in OpenHistoricalMap.

The more conventional way to do this is to open a map note. In a day or two this topic will disappear into the mists of time and no one will see it…

Are people unfamiliar with complex things not allowed to ask for others to help out and fix something for them? This seems to be a tad hostile response :/

There’s nothing wrong with opening a forum thread to coordinate a complex or controversial change to a large portion of the map! There’s an equal chance a note in the middle of the Caspian Sea would also disappear into the ‘mists of time’…

It’s a realistic response. Would you prefer if I sugar-coat it a bit for you? The number of eyes on this forum is small, unless someone happens to be very interested in this then nothing is going to happen*.

* Roll this around in enough sugar to make it not “hostile” to you.

I was mapping in the Volga delta. and I can say that first you need to draw the shores correctly. they are drawn very poorly in many places.
for example

The actual geometry of territorial waters, as for other maritime delimitations, has little to do with the shore in OSM but to do with base lines (defined by countries and treaties), and the geomoetry was imported from VLIZ marineregions (a good choice as they do the hard work for us).
Maybe a ticket to extend or add in the ticketing system:

@pfg21 is right, but it’s orthogonal to nautical boundaries.
