“Include Marker” checkbox should be checked by default with embed sharing

“Include Marker” checkbox should be checked by default with map sharing and embed generation.

When attempting to use OSM-generated embed on a site, similar to what I would ordinarily do with Google maps, I noticed there was no pin dropper in the embedded output, no matter the zoom level. Google maps doesn’t have this hurtle, though I’m aware they care less about data and privacy (which might be why it’s off?)

After hitting up AI for a fix, I eventually stumbled across the &marker=long, lat to put into the embed url. Then I had a doh moment where I saw the “Include Marker” checkbox and thought “Oh that was easy”, but I didn’t see it at first, or know that I should turn it on. However, if it was default “checked”, it would have saved a 30 minute headache and potentially crawling back to Google.

If there’s no security impact on this, is there any possibility of getting “Include marker” on as default? I think it would make using OSM more user-friendly to GM users wanting to implement open platforms.

Thanks in advance for a great platform and keeping maps open.

Thank you for your feedback. This is something controlled by the website, so I suggest that you open an issue on GitHub at GitHub - openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website: The Rails application that powers OpenStreetMap · GitHub, where the right people will be able to weigh in. From a technical standpoint I believe that this would be trivial to implement, but there might be other considerations (as you do mention).
