In-person Western Cape OSM?

Hello,

Do any OSMers meet up in the Western Cape, or any interest in doing so?

I’ll be there in 2 weeks time till the end of April. Based in Montagu, but might spend a weekend in Cape Town (also flying in/out of CPT). My actual ability to travel/meet up will depend on what the wife’s family is doing.

I’m normally in the UK. I’ve been contributing to OpenStreetMap since 2007 (when my city was blank). You might know me by my blog Living With Dragons or my YouTube channel Mapper Diaries. Last year I ran State of the Map Europe.

I’m a really big fan of OpenStreetMap, but I also know it’s the people that make it what it is and that’s why it can be good to meet them and chat in person.

Howzit, I’ll be in Gqeberha over Easter until the 18th April 2026, I could be tempted to visit Cape Town.

Hi Gregory,

Great to hear you’ll be in the Western Cape —and welcome in advance.

I’m a local OSMer based in Cape Town and would be happy to connect. I’ll be joining a ramble (local hiking group. here’s the schedule) around Little Lion’s Head and Oude Schip on Saturday, 18 April. It’s a strenuous 5–6 hour route with some scrambling and exposure, but the coastal views are world-class (and the trail data can always use a field check!)—the group charges a R50 visitor’s fee, but it’s a great way to meet locals, see the sites, get into nature, elevate the heart-rate, etc.

You’d be very welcome to join if your schedule allows.
Let me know if that might work for you and I can share the specific meeting coordinates and organizer details.

Best, Adrian

Thank you for the hiking invite, I would have considered it if we were spending more time in Cape Town or closer by.

Doing a trip to meet mappers is now less likely. My wife left her driving license at home so we’re dependent on the family for travel. :slightly_frowning_face:

On the positive, I updated a shopping quarter in Robertson today. I originally mapped some shops when the quarter was new 2 years ago, but there’s been some business changes. Very easy to do with the “Every Door” app.
