iD Point-Labels missing from OSM?

Hi, today I had a first go at iD editing a building-point and adding a point. The building-point edit worked fine; but the line-point doesn’t show on my browser OSM map, and I couldn’t find a way to get a Name or Tag entry to show as a Label or Marker on the map.
However, when I tap Edit in the browser - assume this is iD editing? - to make additions/changes to the map square I’m looking at, large Labels/Markers in heavy darkGrey font suddenly appear that are nowhere to be seen in the normal map in non-editing mode!?
The example map (see link below) is a UK motorway junction - without junction number-

in standardLayer.

Now switch to edit-mode in firefoxBrowser and large labels appear: Almondsbury Roundabout Junction 16; Rugby Football Ground; Govt Office etc.
Why aren’t these labels appearing on the standard/transportMap layers?
Can I edit them into the map layers and/or create a Point that will show a text Label or Marker?

Thanks for any help on this.

What you refer to a “line-point” - what kind of object are you trying to map? Not every mappable object displays in every map, and among those that are displayed, not all are labelled. If you describe what you are trying to add we can probably help further.

In general, rendered maps have to be selective about the displayed labels. This varies from map to map, and by zoom level within a map. For some object types no labels are shown. Where labels are shown, they are usually taken from the name= tag, but might sometimes use other tags such as a reference or house number.

Some of the labels you mention appear to refer to the type of object rather than the name, e.g. “Govt Office”, so I wouldn’t be surprised they don’t display.

Hi Chris,

most of the objects you mentioned are well displayed in the standard map:

map1
map2

but you have to be aware that this depends on the zoom level you choose.

Generally I do not think it would be wise to touch well mapped objects as long as you are not really comfortable with the editor and absolutely sure about what you are doing.

Ah, thanks Mike. The motorway junction numbers are miles from the junction ~ always wondered/complained why osm didn’t show them :expressionless:

Now know where to look. How do the green trunkRoad and blue square motorway symbols/labels get included in maps, do you know?

Regards,

C.

The original road labels will be shown on a map by decision of the renderer, this is nothing a mapper can enforce. What the mapper has to care for is to tag the road with the correct attributes (road type and numer), which is the case for the roads in your link as far as I can see.

The renderer (in the given case OSM standard map) shows the road labels with as a small square with the given reference like M5 and A38. If you like to see the original labels instead you would have to apply to the renderer.

There is a german version of the map showing the german labels in their original design:

As you can see it is possible to do so, but as I said, this is a decision by the discretion of the renderer.

The “Americana” map is another example of style that pays quite a lot of attention to road labels/shields. While it is developed with the USA in mind as the name suggests, it may be closer to what you are looking for even for the UK. But just to stress as @Map_HeRo said, all these styles are based on the same underlying data - they can’t be controlled by changing the data.
