To expand a bit on @alan_gr’s point, my take is that both OSM empowers you to decide how best to improve the map, and expects you to make that decision, taking the local situation and practices in to account. That is some times a bit of a rocky path that requires experience and practice. And as @alan_gr notes comes a bit as a shock to many, regardless of cultural background.
Trying to short cut tends to not work well, particularly when it boils down to somebody else telling you what to do, because you then miss out on the positive feed back that -you- made the choice and the “map” is better because of exactly that choice.
