How to tag writing residencies?

What is the best way to tag writing residencies? These are places/retreats for writers who are granted a temporary stay, often through an application process, in order to work on a specific project. The residencies are typically located in remote or scenic natural settings and offer a quiet and inspiring environment. Participation is usually free of charge for the writers, as the stay is covered by a grant. In addition to providing space and time for focused creative work, these places also allow for informal interaction and exchange with fellow writers.

I’ve considered using some type of amenity=community_centre, but I’m not sure it’s appropriate for this kind of place.

Not sure if it helps much :thinking:, but just thinking about “similar” options you have both office= & amenity=coworking & also leisure=hackerspace.

TI also has 1 use of activity:writing=yes (on a tea shop in France!).

So amenity=writing or similar may work?

How long is the stay? Hours, days, or weeks?

I would tag its physical properties, so a detached building or so. I’m not sure that the fact it can be a writers’ retreat paid for by a grant is relevant to OSM. Unless there’s a sign for it, then I guess it’s a kind of tourism=apartment or tourism=chalet…

Hi,

Tag it in the way a temporary place of residence is usually tagged in OSM according to the characteristics of the feature (guest_house, chalet, apartment, etc.).

Then indicate that the feature is intended as a writer’s residence with :for.

For example,

tourism=guest_house
guest_house:for=writer

Or

tourism=chalet
chalet:for=writer

Using a similar tagging scheme of other OSM features. For example social facilities or community centres.

Not sure but I think it’s usually for a few weeks.

Makes sense. The place does on occasion offer some activities (talks, teaching) that an average guest house doesn’t but that’s probably too vague to tag.

there are similar places for other artists, also architects, musicians, etc.
The ones I know of are typically with the grant duration of a year.
I did not tag specifics so far, as I see them similar to e.g. university grants which we don’t tag specifically either.

An example: https://www.villamassimo.de/de/stipendiaten

But you tagged themtourism=guest_house or … ?

I did not touch it at all, it’s mapped as an arts_centre (not sure if this is ok, at least it seems related): Node: ‪Accademia Tedesca Roma - Villa Massimo‬ (‪2860950967‬) | OpenStreetMap

I’ve used amenity=arts_centre for such a place: the wiki states that such a centre “may well be involved with the creation of those works”. Such places probably also exist for other kinds of artists (painters, sculptors, musicians, etc.).

The alternative “amenity=arts_centre” looks good to me too.

Is it primarily a place of retreat for a writer or a group of writers, an isolated place of residence where they can work and nothing else, or is it a place where other activities typical of an art centre take place? The most appropriate tagging will depend on each case.

The “:for” tag still works well if it is only for writers.

The topic made me think of Paul Sheldon and Annie Wilkes, the number one fan. /OT

From what I can tell it is a bit of both. Mainly a place for writers (plus translators and illustrators) to stay and work on their book projects. But also some activities for the public a few times a year (readings and talks by the writers). To complicate things even more it seems there are some shorter periods every year without writers staying and when the place can be rented by anyone for conferences etc.
