How to tag if the surface is leaf litter? `surface=leaf_litter`, `leaf_type=needleleaved`?

There is a track where the surface is a thick layer of needles and other small tree debris from the surrounding trees.

On the OSM Wiki page about the supported surface tags I do not find any corresponding there.

How should I tag it?

• surface=ground (generic)?
• surface=leaf_litter (inventing my own, undocumented) plus leaf_type=needleleaved?
• Anything else?

It is this track, currently I have used surface=unpavedsurface=ground as suggested in this commentdue to lack of better tags.

I would probably go with surface=ground, especially if that’s a typical way the ground looks in a natural setting in that part of the world.

Imho the surface tags are referring to the man_made object and as such I would not support a tag surface=pine_needles or surface=leaves. If you look at a littered road in a neglected suburb you would not tag this surface=rubbish, would you?

Depending on the surface underneath the needles I would tag “compacted”, “gravel” or “fine_gravel”. If there is no constructed track underneath but just natural ground, I would tag it “ground”, as in a forest the foliage or needles are part of the natural environment.

Yes, a hiking trail. Signed.

It is (generally) not used by vehicles, only by foot. But it is still
wide enough that you can drive.

Then it crosses a lava field, where you can see that it is used as
hiking, and has markings. Behind the lava field it continues as a
footpath where it is clearly visible that it is used.

Apparently this is exactly what happens. If you add a general reply to the topic using the blue “Reply” button at the end everything is fine. You can then even quote as many passages out of other posts as you like. If you reply directly to the post of another user using the reply button under the post you will get the error messages because Discourse expects you to use the comment function instead. I had the same error message and when I tried the different options this was the result.
