I’d like to delve into the world of OSM, which I really like the idea of. However, I feel like I’m missing something fundamental about data browsing in map on openstreetmap.org.
On the map I would like to find and display all points in a category, for example firepit (leisure=firepit). But the search box only searches in addresses or names.
This means that if I want to find a church in my city in Europe, the first search result is “the “Church” train station in San Francisco”.
I have found that you can search for points by category (Map Features) at, for example, overpass-turbo.eu, openstreetbrowser.org or openpoimap.eu, but neither works in a completely simple and user-friendly way.
I would therefore like to ask, please: 1. Where can I easily and for everyday use search for POIs by category, name or other attributes and immediately display them (clickable to open the details) on the map? 2. How do I understand the search box on openstreetmap.org?
osm.org is mostly used as a direct feedback for mappers, the provided data can be more sensibly browsed by sometimes specialized websites.
For looking at different categories of “stuff” I like https://www.openstreetbrowser.org
Hello. In addition to the tools already mentioned, there are many more. OsmApp It’s fabulous and I think they use Photon which is based on Nominatim.
If you don’t want to mess around with other tools and want to focus on the OSM website and optimize the search for items there, I recommend you go a little further than usual and learn how to extend consultations.
Nominatim offers a list of special phrases that can be used to improve and filter the search.
Additionally you can use the API directly and configure a search URL with some extra parameters.
P.S. OverPass is the best there is for specific searches, but as you could already see it requires using a query language documented in the API. There you can also use the Assistant which is quite flexible and helps a lot for simple searches.
