A ski resort is a large forest with pistes (ski runs) cut out of the forest.
Here is an example of how one user mapped a ski resort. iD – Natural Wood | OpenStreetMap There is a polygon with landuse=winter_sports. That is the easy part. There is a LINE with a RELATIOSHIP and NATURAL WOOD = OUTER Is this what maps the area light grey? Also, would I then make polygons inside and set FEATURE TYPE to NATURAL WOOD?It also has a tag(natural=wood).
Here is an example of another ski resort. iD | OpenStreetMap It is all forest. I want to make it similar to the above ski resort. How would I go about that please? Thank you.
Let me preface my answer with the statement that I find landuse=winter_sports problematic, because of the issues described in the wiki article:
However, a typical ski resort features many long pistes that span a large land area, and is not suitable for mapping with a single area. Alternatively, complete ski resorts with all associated facilities could also be mapped with a relation site=piste.
But, in reality, many small(ish) ski resorts look like yours: several ski slopes cut out from the forest at a relatively small area. On your site, there are currently two elements with usable geometries:
way 797235747, which is the outer boundary of the surrounding natural=wood, but extends far beyond the ski resort boundaries.
I would say that it’s currently mapped acceptably (you may wish to tweak the ski resort boundaries). A “neater” way could be to transfer the winter_sports area to follow part of way 797235747 as a new boundary, enclosed with a new way to be drawn near the parking lot to the north (easier done than explained). I could do that for you if you like…
P.S. I just hate when people split large areas at completely arbitrary lines, such as here. It’s not along roads or rivers, nor even along meridians or parallels…
