How to map historical routes or paths (may not be in current use)?

A local group is trying to discover the route of an historic military road that crossed our island in around 1860. Part of the route has been determined using old documents and surveys. From those documents I’ve found segments visible using lidar. Other sections are known from local knowledge.

What I would like to do is to map these segments and/or extrapolations using a unique line symbol so that it doesn’t get mistaken for a current footpath. Right now I am using PATH with tags and marking it “not accessible”.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Sounds like the sort of thing that should be added to OpenHistoricalMap: https://www.openhistoricalmap.org/

Or maybe a umap

Yes, umap or OpenHistoricalMap are the recommended avenues. Do not add the data to OSM as it will be removed again because it is not verifiable on the ground.
