How to make a map like this?

https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckcars/comments/1kt9xog/this_is_how_much_land_is_reserved_for_cars_in/

As they seem to have decided that anything that isn’t a building or a park (and that one pedestrian square) as a being ‘for cars’ you could probably just extract those features and stick them in a layer in QGIS with the layer styling set to “inverted polygons”.

I don’t know what satellite layer would be suitable for your purposes.

OP already answered that question: Reddit - The heart of the internet

Used a high resolution screenshot of a clean aerial view in Google Earth, then added a semi-transparent layer in Adobe Illustrator where I used simple polygons to highlight all the space for cars. Then I joined all the polygons into a single shape. The aim is to contrast space that we think of as being the most utilized in a city with a visual representation of just how much it isn’t.

I know, I meant automatically with Openstreetmap.

Well if it is possible to do it better with OSM data I would want that.

that depends on few things

  1. how you interpret roads? many are usable also by pedestrians and cyclists

  2. what about greenery? author of that linked piece considers trees next to roads to be “reserved for cars” for some silly reason

Would you be fine with map showing car parking areas in red? These are often more objective and actionable, and only few people are actually against having roads. It should be doable with Overpass (if that is interesting, but not sure how to create it - let us know!)

Also, such map is fairly easy to make. Making map that takes into account roads/sidewalks/cycleways would probably require QGIS or similar tool - but if you are interested in experimenting and learning, let us know here!
