In Michigan, USA, there are “social districts” where outdoor drinking is permitted. Should this be mapped, and if so, how?

Key:alcohol - OpenStreetMap Wiki says “alcohol=yes may indicate that the consumption of alcohol is permitted at a certain location or that a certain location sells alcohol. The intended usage must then be inferred through other tagging. For example, alcohol=yes used in conjunction with leisure=park implies the absence of a restriction (you can drink alcohol here)”
Not sure how that would work when it’s just a general area though?
Sounds like leisure = social_district would be a good addition, but I don’t have it in me to go through the whole RFP process just for this.

It’s not one facility or venue. If it belongs in OSM, boundary should be used.
Instead, before, or besides a border, the “Commons Area” seems to be on streets. alcohol= =yes / =designated could be added to the highway= roads first.
Well you can just use it, no need to go through a process. Key question for me would be whether this is verifiable on the ground (signs, markings etc). If the only way to verify is by looking at some government-managed website then maybe we shouldn’t duplicate the information. OSM’s strength is survey - something that we cannot survey is also something that we can never improve, it would always just be a (possibly outdated) copy of a government website rotting away in OSM.
- Go to a supposed social district street with an open can of beer in the evening and drink it (preferably with friends)
- Go to a nearby street and do the same
- Repeat steps 1-2 every evening for 6-12 months:
- If you get fined => the street is not in the social district
- If you do not get fined => the street is within the social district

So is Depot Town a suburb / neighbourhood, & does the social district cover all of it?
It is a commercial district; the social district has overlapping but distinct boundaries.
