I’m mapping a residential area where several properties share a common driveway that splits into individual driveways for each house. I’m unsure how to correctly tag this shared driveway so that it reflects the shared access but also distinguishes the individual driveways leading to each property.
Specifically, I’m wondering:
Should the shared driveway be tagged as a separate way, and if so, what tags should I use?
How do I ensure that navigation tools understand the shared portion and can route users correctly to their individual properties?
Are there any best practices for mapping these kinds of shared private roads in OSM?
I’ve looked through the OSM Wiki, but I’m still a bit confused about the best approach for this situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I would map the longest shared porting as one way with the individual driveways leading off of it as separate ways. Tags on all the ways of highway=service and service=driveway. That is all you probably need to do.
But I’d also tag the surface and probably add access=destination to all the ways.
I also tag the shared portion as plain highway=service with no service= tag. Then tag each individual driveway as highway=service + service=driveway. Example.
I have sometimes used highway=service + service=pipestem (wiki). Pipestem tagging hasn’t really “caught on”, but it satisfies the need to tag this specific situation while not interfering with the base tagging of highway=service. Another option is the longer highway=service + service=driveway + driveway=pipestem, which is more popular but then declares the shared section to be a driveway rather than a service road.
