How long does it take until a deleted place is removed in main OSM map?

Hello.
About 15 Minutes ago I have deleted a playground in OSM because it is on our private property and must not be displayed in public.
The operation number / ID is 166420759.
How long does it take until a deleted place is removed in main OSM map?

Regards
Martin

A few minutes, if you refresh your browser cache.

If the playground is still visible in aerial imagery, someone might map it again. In that case, it might be better to keep it and tag it with access=private instead of deleting it.

If I log in and try to edit, it is already invisible.
But in the normal map (wihout being logged in) it is still there.
Does this make sense?
I tried different browsers and cleared the cache.

Depends on what you call “normal map”. Nearly every map that is based on the data in the OSM database takes time to update. That timeframe can range from hours to several month.

(Also: please don’t delete things. Mark them as private instead)

If you type control+shift+r the browser will reload the site and your changes should be visible

Ok, it seems to be gone now :+1:

I reverted Martin’s edit and marked the playground as private instead

Oh and for @Martin511, just because something shows up on the default OSM.org map doesn’t mean people will try accessing it

Private property does not imply that it is forbidden to map it, and I do not see any right to forbid mapping private property elements.

The correct way to handle this case is to add the tag access=private, as @Le_SharkoĂŻste1 has done it.

As the owners, we have created a playground here for ourselves, which costs a lot of money to build and maintain.
It is used (and also damaged and littered) 80% of the time by strangers.
Unfortunately, for structural reasons, we cannot fence our residential complex or provide it with a lockable gate.
This is the reason why the playground has already been removed from Google Maps.
Now I have finally managed to remove it from OSM. So what you wrote really didn’t please us.
I don’t know what the legal situation is, and I don’t want to go that far. I’m simply appealing to common sense and saying that you should respect people who don’t want their own playground to be shown publicly on maps. Not even with a ‘private’ marker - because strangers aren’t interested in that.
Can you understand that?

We absolutely understand. We deal with this kind of problem constantly.

The problem is: People at OSM can see the playground on aerials so it may easily be readded by the next mapper checking the area on aerials.

And I’ve readded it with appropriate tagging (access=private) to clearly tell OSM-based apps to not route towards the playground (OSM is a database, not a map - WHAT YOU SEE ON OSM.ORG IS ONE POSSIBLE USAGE OF OSM DATA.)

That (yet again) something being shown on a map doesn’t mean anyone is free to access it… see military domains and prisons.

Please refer to these (as they apply to anything in private properties)

We’re not Google Maps. So what is unacceptable for Google Maps (like your private playground here) can generally stay on OSM.

And this sounds silly but: if you don’t want your playground to be visible on aerial imagery, then maybe cover it?

Okay, thank you very much.
I will now take the time to draw all the visible, uncovered private playgrounds in our neighbourhood. This will give us a nice overview.
The owners can then cover them up and mark them as ‘private’ themselves if they want to.
Best wishes and have a nice evening.

Go ahead, this will only get us more contributors.

Just a note on this little part:

To avoid just this to happen (re-mapping of a feature that someone does not want on the map), it could be mapped but tagged in a way that “hides” it – i.e. using tags that are not established. E.g.: dont_show:amenity=playground.

I do not propose that as a solution, but if “People at OSM can see the playground on aerials so it may easily be readded by the next mapper checking the area on aerials.” is the only concern, this actually would be a solution.

And if you already know that access is restricted, please indicate so from the beginning (e.g. access=private, access=customters, access=permissive, etc., whatever applies, read the wiki page on access=*).

Thanks for contribution!,
and I hope that you can prevent littering on your playground by local means, @Martin511.

(Actually, I doubt that most people find the playground due to OSM at all, especially “littering” people, which I suspect find it more by strolling around locally. Or have you seen an increase of the “vandalism” correlated with the playground appearing on OSM?)

This, especially with the playground being unfenced.

Is there a trash can at the playground?
If yes, then we should perhaps map this one too so the users of the playground can find it
