I would like to add public ownership. Specifically ownership that allows public access for hiking, biking and horseback. In this case the land is owned by the local county and is designated for public use. However it borders on private lands and it would be good to delineate the property line to help prevent inadvertent trespass. There are also local conservation organizations that allow access and for the same reasons we would like to show the areas.
I have talked to the agencies and have edited shp files of the property that allows public access. Is there a way to upload this at one time and label it with the ownership? Kinda like what has been done with the National Parks and other areas. It would be nice to add a different border color for each owership. In this case only 2-3.
Otherwise I would have to trace each area from the County parcel ownership map. Really time consuming.
Below is a screenshot of the local NatlPk showing what I’m trying to do with a different color border.
Thanks for the reply. What you show with the WH Ranch Park is exactly what I am trying to do.
What would I convert the shp file to? I usually use ExpertGPS for conversions. More detailed instructions would help. I’m new at this and appreciate the guidance.
Epsg:4326 would be suitable to use in josm.
The shapefile will open in a new layer.
Select the boundary and then ‘merge selected’ in to your osm data layer.
If the area has sides that coincide with other boundaries, you would normally not have duplicate overlapping lines unless a small overlap.
If you decide to split the polygon and share a side with another polygon it will then need to be a multipolygon.
If it is a simple polygon just add the tags to that, but if it is a multipolygon add the tags to the multipolygon relation instead.
Delete all the shapefile tags and add the osm ones. Run the Josm validator once you are ready to upload to osm.
JOSM is able to open shapefiles using the OpenData plugin but maybe it has built in support now and the plugin is not required??? Software comparison/Import a shapefile - OpenStreetMap Wiki.
Not sure if ExpertGPS is able to do conversion to EPSG:4326…maybe need to do that in something like QGIS.
If the main goal here is to prevent inadvertent trespass, you’ll probably have more luck by making sure the access tag is set correctly on all the paths/trails in the area.
Some outdoors apps (such as AllTrails) will take this into account and show private paths in red with a “PRIVATE” label. Unless I’m mistaken, simply importing a property boundary will not have this effect.
Yes, I have been updating the access info. There are a lot of trails with different access, i.e. bikes, horses, foot only, etc. I have to double check with the various entities.
