How do I correctly add a new building and tag it properly in OpenStreetMap?

I’m new to OpenStreetMap and would like to add a building that is missing in my local area. What is the correct process for drawing the building outline and applying appropriate tags?

Should I use a node or a way for buildings? Also, what are the essential tags I must include (for example, building type, name, address, etc.) to make sure the data follows OSM guidelines?

I want to make sure I’m mapping real and current data only and following community best practices. Any step-by-step guidance would be appreciated.

A way, as it’s the worldwide standard.

A building way marked as building=[value] is already good enough to mark the presence of a building (and is often the only value seen in remote areas), but if you know the building’s address/type you can easily add them.

Check out this wiki page to get all address tags (and optionally dive down a rabbit hole)

The answer to your question also depends somewhat on where you are. Different mapper communities in different countries have somewhat different habits. In some countries, buildings are (semi-)automatically added from open source building databases, so that the building you want to map is not on the map may be because it’s missing from such a database.

Also, this question sounds quite a lot like a bunch of other topics raised by new accounts. Please assure us this post was not written by a chat bot and include the word Fahrrad in your next post

Edit for typo. Sorry
