Our address is a new build development and the postcode was wrongly entered to begin with. How do I update our postcode to make it correct please?
Click the Edit button on the top left corner (if you already have an OSM account), then select your house and change the data.
I have tried this but it doesn’t allow me to change the address. Any part of it.
Probably because it’s linked to a wikipedia page. Go to the bottom of the page, you will be able to change there.
I can’t see any linked Wikipedia page. When I click on our road, it says
Source: local knowledge
Just to confirm, I have an OSM account, selected
Edit,
Clicked on our road and then selected Inspect. Is this correct? There is nothing in there that allows me to change the actual address.
Did you actually select the building?
The address data should be added on buildings or entrances, not on on roads…
When looking at the address data on a building in a random, remote place in Switzerland it looks like the screenshot below.
Selected building on the right, address data on the left.
Also not all buildings have their postcode directly attached to them. Oftentimes the postcode comes an area that the house is situated in.
For further help, I think it would be really valuable if you could share the location this is about.
Ramsons Road, BA3 4ZE
The postcode should be BA3 4ZG
Thanks for your help everyone!
Way: ‪Ramsons Road‬ (‪1366479535‬) | OpenStreetMap is correct.
Apparently, BA3 4ZE doesn’t come from OSM but is used by Nominatim. You way raise a ticket on the repository.
Ok thanks for checking, how do I change it with Nominatim? How do I raise a ticket with them please?
The postcodes in Nominatim that aren’t in OSM are coming from the Ordnance Survey Codepoint Open data but they’re only centroids, so roughly the centre of the addresses coverered by the postcode.
As such I suspect BA3 4ZE which is positioned near Cowslip Place is actually correct, especially as BA3 4ZF is slightly to the north near Oxlip Way.
The BA3 4ZG code is not known at all, presumably because it’s a new code that wasn’t in the last data set loaded and when it appears it will likely be near Ramsons Road.
In the meantime the easy fix it to add the postcode to OSM so it will be found that way.
Apparently, for UK postcode, it’s in this repository: GitHub - osm-search/gb-postcode-data: Preprocessing Great Britain postdata for Nominatim geocoder
And the source is from Ordonance Survey, OS Data Hub
Here downloaded and displayed on QGIS:
You can reach them, ask for correction, the data is updated quaterly (current version : August 2025).
Good analysis. I maintain the GitHub - osm-search/gb-postcode-data: Preprocessing Great Britain postdata for Nominatim geocoder repository and do the data conversion for Nominatim. OS Codepoint does quarterly releases, the next will be early November, usually first of the month.
You can now search for BA3 4ZG, I added a shell of an address point (please add house number/name if you can). Also more data should make the programs better so if you could add more addresses on the road and the other roads, things should work better.
Thank you for adding it. It comes up on Nomanatim as the attached image.
The address needs to be:
Ramsons Road
Stratton on the Fosse
Radstock
BA3 4ZG
It looks like the postcode is coming up as the full address?
Radstock seems to be close by, but this address isn’t inside the boundaries:
So I don’t see how Nominatim could or should display Radstock.
Both Radstock and Stratton on the Fosse are defined with admin_level=10. There is no admin_level=8 defined in this area.
Ok Stratton on the Fosse will be fine. The screen shot I added still is not showing the road name though when I checked this morning. Also it still looks like the full address is showing in the PostCode field.
I’m sorry but all I needed to do from the start was update the post code of an incorrectly added address, which was done by someone else. Is there no way to actually update the postcode on both OSM and Nominatim?
The correct post code for all of Ramsons Road is BA3 4ZG, but on OSM/Nominatim it comes up as BA3 4ZE.
Is it possible to update all of Ramsons Road to say BA3 4ZG please?
It’s simple: hope that on the 1st of November, the Ordonance Survey will publish the correct data, then @mtmail will take that input.
So in a month or less, everything should be fine.

The label “Postcode” in your screenshot means that the object found is a postcode (as distinct from a city or street or county or many other things that could be searched for), it doesn’t mean that everything that follows is part of the postcode.
This appears to have been resolved now. Thank you for your contributions!
