Historic plane crash site (WW2)

Hi, i need some help with a specific problem. I´m an experienced user but have never mapped an object like this. There is an historic plane crash site from WW2 (american fighter plane) near my hometown here in Germany. Sadly most people here have forgotten about it, and it was never mapped in OpenStreetMap. But I don’t really know which tag is correct.

My first thought was historic=archaeological_site because years ago it was an archaeological site. But nowadays there is only a memorial stone left.

Any ideas? Thanks

Is the memorial stone mapped and where is it?

We map what is there now. So the memorial stone can be mapped - check out Tag:historic=memorial - OpenStreetMap Wiki , perhaps Tag:memorial=stone - OpenStreetMap Wiki - these pages suggest lots of tags that can be added with details (e.g. memorial:conflict=WW2)

Is there anything at all at this location? Memorial? Marker? Remains of aircraft?

Absolutely map just the memorial if that is what remains. For situations where there’s more than a memorial left historic=aircraft_wreck has some usage - see for example here (slightly misnamed). The memorial for that is here, and see also the relevant wikipedia article for this example.

Thanks. I have already mapped the memorial stone and it’s the only visible object that’s still there (above ground). Following your advice, I will leave it as it is and maybe i will add some informations and tags.

For what it’s worth, while in OSM itself we only map what’s left on the ground, you could look into Wikidata, as far as I know it would be appropriate to create an item for an plane crash and add info like the coordinates, date and type of plane. This then allows people to make maps showing things like the locations of all WW2 crash sites based on open data (by combining Wikidata and OSM).

There is also OpenHistoricalMap that may be of interests.
