I need to download historic shapefiles all around the world and i downloaded it from https://planet.openstreetmap.org/historical-shapefiles/
. And i couldn’t find historic places on the files i downloaded. Can you help me to download historic places data? Where can i find this dataset or shapefile?
OpenStreetMap is a database of the present observable state of the world, see the historic page on the OSM Wiki. Our historic planet files are going back at max 20 years.
You might be able to find really historic data on https://www.openhistoricalmap.org/
Thank you for your answer. When I said historic places, I meant historical places to visit around the world. I needed a dataset of historical places around the world with location information. As I said, I downloaded the historical shapefiles folder from the site I saw above, but I could not find the data I wanted there when I looked at the shapefiles. Did you have a chance to help me how to do what I mentioned? Thanks in advance.
Are you looking for something like this?: overpass turbo
Yes, I am looking for something like this. I tried this too, I needed to collect the data of all historical places around the world. When I try this with the overpass API, my request times out because the query takes too long. Is there anything else I can do about this situation? Thanks for your help
Ah, something like this?
If you need “all historical places around the world”, then you won’t be able to get it with Overpass queries, but will have to look through the planet data for all the historic
-Tags that are of interest to you.
You can download regional extracts of OpenStreetMap data from https://download.geofabrik.de/, I would start with a small extract and see what you can get out of the data.
Why do you need a shapefile, what’s the goal of your process?
You’ll need to define (for yourself) what you mean by “historic places”. That won’t necessarily correspond completely with the use of the historic
tag in OSM. I did that for a map style that I maintain, but my “historic” list doesn’t include (for example) historic windmills that are still operational. Your list may be different.
Start by identifying (with overpass) data in a small area that matches your criteria, and then once you’ve done that use “osmium filter-tags” do that with a downloaded OSM extract or the entire planet. Start small first, though.
