I would like to correct the map for pathfinding purposes so that taxis headed west on Westminster Bridge Road could make a right turn into York Road, as they are permitted to do using the turning lane (it’s possible looking at historic pictures that at one point the turn was only for buses but has been relaxed to include taxis).
I am very new to editing OSM and I can’t work out how to do it using the ID web-based editor. Also more generlaly, what the preferred way to arrange the road topography would be.
Since that section of York Road is marked bus=true, taxi=true, I believe that extension would suffice to include the right turn.
However I can’t work out what to click in the editor to extend the way 679070803 to include existing node 2263204228. If you can advise, please tell me exactly what to click on or press in the editor, step by step, because I’m stumped following similar instructions I’ve found searching online, because they all seem to reference earlier versions of the editor. I tried making a new way to connect 2263204228 and node 5337281222, then merging the new way with existing way 679070803 but Merge is greyed out in the right click menu when I select both ways.
OR: would it be better to have an (anonymous) new way to represent the turn right lane, to avoid implying that York Road itself extends further south than it does?
For this junction, I think the easiest solution(and one which reflects the junction’s actual geometry) is to move the point at which York Road joins Westminster Bridge Road to the node at which carriageways of Westminster Bridge Road split. You would also have to move the junction of the separate cycle track to that node. You can then dispense with conditional oneway restrictions on that very short section of Westminster Bridge Road.
There are other places where you may need to add or modify exceptions to restriction relations. TfL frequently fiddle with turn restrictions from red routes, which you can see in the notices which they publish in The Gazette.
There is one “problem” with that and that is also the reason the OP has problems with extending York Road. It is a member of several relations.
As side note, that part of York Road is tagged with est_width=1 which seamed a bit narrow to me.
P.S. This relation (8475877) of which York Road is a member looks a bit strange to me, it has only 2 members being the 2 segments into which York Road is split.
