Why is this new category needed instead of being hosted as part of the existing ones?
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but some topics with relation to Greenland are very different from Scandinavian Denmark. Also, many Greenlanders don’t feel particularly Danish, so it may attract more Greenlandic mappers, if we have a community for Greenland.
Is this a new space or does it already exist on other platforms? Where?
There was once a mailing list for Greenland, but it closed down long ago.
Current volume of messages on the former platforms, if any (per week/per month)
Once or twice a year there may be a discussion about Greenland-mapping in the Denmark community. So it will not be a busy community, but I still think it would be valuable.
If a Greenlandic community is added, I expect the message volume about Greenland to increase a bit.

PS: All official place names from the Oqaasileriffik database Nunat Aqqi are ready for import to establish an editable base to have volunteers going to pinpoint things in the vast open spaces.
We just need the user group base inside OSM to be established.

Karl Brix Zinglersen here. It is many years since I have logged in the wiki, and I wasn’t able to regenerate a password, maybe I used my work email address from my time in Asiaq more than 13 years ago. Now I work at Pinngortitaleriffik, Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, also in Nuuk, Greenland. So I had to setup a new profile for the wiki. My OSM mapping profile is the same as always.
More than 15 years ago, I assisted Oqaasileriffik, the Language Secretariat in Greenland, with transforming a MS Access non-spatial database/register to GIS database, and the different place name responsible of Oqaasileriffik since then has since replaced the place names from artificial coordinates to locations related to the topographical map, interviewed indigenous knowledge bearers of settlements and towns across Greenland, removed all locations when a new and more exact topographical map were produced by the Danish Mapping Agency in 2017 as well as place names for nautical charts. Generally, all done by one employee and a student assistant. Over they years, the Oqaasileriffik has asked for my advise now and then but otherwise been able to work on by themselves. A beautiful mapping story in its own right.
How can I help the community of establish the indigenous and governed place names of Kalaallit Nunaat in an OSM setting?
I took up the challenge from there. Have received all of the name data and very close to having finished putting the lot into OSM structure (base layout is flat, so a fjord is a fjord. OSM is hierarchical natural - bay- fjord. Moreover data are point coordinates, no shapes for island, glacier, fjord, river etc. There will be ample opportunity for all fith fixme, and verifying sanity of the lot.
Currently all of the different reported names from intervieved people are being extracted for alt_name.
Hopefully first import sets next week.
And for Karl: You will probably be the best moderator / final opinion, anyone can even dream of…
Imports from Nunat Aqqi are revised and ready. Simple objects withou at fixme will arrive into OSM tonight. Things with fixme will go through a seach for duplicates before commencing.
@Karl_Brix_Zinglersen, it’s been suggested that you could be part of the moderator team of a future forum subcategory for Greenland. Is that something you’d be willing to do?
I’d like to invite the community to discuss this category creation request and will wait for about a week (at least 5 days according to the moderator selection criteria) to ensure that any objections can be heard. After that, I or another member of @forums-governance will set up a simple poll that will again run for 5 days. This will formally demonstrate community support for this new category and moderator team.
Also, if there are any relevant considerations from @mods-denmark or other members of the wider OSM community, I’d prefer if they’re raised at this point rather than later.
