GPS Trace Upload Issues - Garmin Mapper

Hello Everyone,
I’ve been trying to upload GPS traces from my Garmin Mapper and all of them have failed. I pull the information from Garmin Explore where my info is uploaded, export as a GPX and tried to upload… Failed. Pulled the file into Gaia, Basecamp & QGIS and it looks good on all those platforms. Tried again… failed. Ran the file through the GPX converter tool recommended on the wiki. Failed again. Not sure if i’m doing something wrong or what’s going on. The traces are for Trail networks that aren’t updated on any satellite imagery yet so they’re the only way to update them. Any help would be appreciated!

Did it fail with a message, or simply didn’t respond?

Hi xLagon Dragonx,

It looks like your file failed to be imported as a GPS trace.

Your file details:

Filename
Gilbert_OHV_Trail_GPS_Trace.gpx
Description
Gilbert MN OHV Trail GPS Trace

Please verify that your file is a valid GPX file or an archive containing GPX file(s) in the supported format (.tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar, .zip, .gpx.gz, .gpx.bz2). Could there be a format or syntax issue with your file? Here is the importing error:

0 points parsed ok. Do they all have lat, lng, alt, timestamp?

More information about GPX import failures and how to avoid them can be found at GPX - OpenStreetMap Wiki.

That’s the key question that you need to answer. If you open your file in a text editor, do you see those tags in the XML of the file? If you don’t, what do you see?

So it looks like they have the lat and lon but i’m not seeing the alt or timestamp. Could this be from how I exported them from Garmin?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?> Gilbert OHV Trail - Gilbert to 135

It certainly could - why don’t you try again and see what options there are?

If you want to see what a non-broken one looks like, here are some of mine.

I tried exporting a few ways from the Garmin web app but I think that’s where my issue is. I’m going to try pulling directly from the device next and see if that fixes the issue. It seems that when I pull the information from the site it removes the time stamps and just keeps the location data.

Figured it out, was exporting incorrectly from Garmin. Thanks for the assistance!
