Getting iD editor to automatically recognise an entity and add a wikidata tag it

Hi folks.

I was wondering: is there a process to for getting the iD editor to automatically recognise a particular entity, and add a wikidata tag for them? Do I have submit a request somewhere to have it added to a list, or…?

For example, I find myself adding an ‘operator=’ tag, for my local district council. (And I keep inadvertantly adding the name is different permutations, creating a mess of different tag values for the same thing)

I can see there is a wikidata entry for them Newry, Mourne and Down District Council - Wikidata

Who do I get in touch with? :upside_down_face:

Thanks! OK I begin to see how this all works -
I have quite a bit of work to do, collating all data I would like to put into this system -
and then I need to figure out how to create and account and contribute (is this all a Github thing? I am no Github user :fearful: )

Yes as stated before it is all on Github, you have to make an account there. You can use the text editor on there to make edits. The interface will guide you to make a pull request when you’re done.

If you’re only going to need it a few dozen times, you can just manually add operator:wikidata=Q16998911 in the raw tag editor.

(I searched for the council name on Wikidata, and copied the QID from its entry)

Oh believe me, I’m into the thousands already for some of these tags :face_without_mouth:

Check out Suggest-A-Brand by OSM user GA_Kevin! It’s designed to make the process of requesting Name Suggestion Index additions easier.

Thanks! I tried out that tool and added half a dozen pull requests, I think!
Hopefully I did it right :slight_smile:

So, once my pull requests have been committed,
does iD need to be updated before I see the autocompletes working in the editor?
Or how do it work?

NSI needs to make a release first.

From Tags · osmlab/name-suggestion-index · GitHub it looks like next one will likely happen soon.

Not entirely sure is merging into iD and new iD release needed.
