Garmin open source maps - no speaking?

Hello,
I own a Garmin Nuvi 57. I recently tried to change its map from the outdated internal map to use a more up to date open source map.

I downloaded all of the .7z files from here: USA OSM Auto | GMapTool, unzipped them, moved the unzipped files to a SD card and installed the card into the Nuvi.

The Nuvi did recognize the card and accept the new maps however when I went to actually use it later it had never heard of Hartford (a city) or Connecticut (a
state). Going into the Nuvi’s settings I noticed not all of the loaded maps were enabled so i enabled them all and tried again. It then was able to direct me to
Hartford but wouldn’t give me the directions verbally like Garmin normally does which I really need while driving?

In the end I had to pull the SD card out of the Garmin while driving and reboot it to use the old maps to get to my destination.

Any input on this would be most welcome. Please comment / advise.

Thank you!

My Nuvi 57 just has 2 voice options: Samatha ‘Speaks Garmin text to voice directions’ and Michelle so I switched it from Samatha to Michelle. I also checked the selected maps and ensured that only the new opensource maps were checked. The system does now speak directions so THANK YOU! I never would have thought to change the voice… It’s not as good as the Garmin text to voice directions as it doesn’t mention street names or exit numbers but at least it does say left /right / exit ramp etc. Still beats paying Garmin $50 every few years for an updated map!
