I am very passionate by old devices which include mobile phones and gps.
Among the gps, some old garmins have benefit from the great Garmin On Trail and on Road maps provided by Help | BBBike Garmin custom map extracts
Garmin On Road have a website, so together with gemini was able to “on roadify” maps for an old blackberry 9790 using osm2gpsmid
But I would like to know more about On Trail, so I could enrich these maps for old java phones, and even one day do for example an europe extraction for garmin basecamp.
Let me know if you can help me found the info.
PS: I am total noob in map creation.
I have no experience with osm2gpsmid, but it sounds like it is a similar process to Garmin map creation - take some data in OSM .PBF format and use a “style definition” to decide what features to show and what not.
One thing I’d suggest is to look at preprocessing the OSM extract using something like “osm-tags-transform” in order to simplify the data before feeding it to osm2gpsmid - that I expect will give you much more control over the process and will be able to omit things and make the resultant file smaller. The README for this Garmin / mkgmap project explains the process.
Back in 2012 or so when these things were new a common approach was to have map tiles locally, and this project was an example of that.
You’ll struggle to access anything remotely on the modern web due to the current “nanny knows best” approach to https and certificates, even if you can get some sort of (wifi?) data access, but some services may be accessible. I’ve kept an http endpoint at http://map.atownsend.org.uk/maps/map/map.html deliberately, but that’s just one style of raster map tiles and just for one area. It’s not like the modern internet isn’t susceptible to single points of failure…
