Funding linkage between OpenStreetMap.org and OpenStreetMap.us

I am a US citizen, and I am trying to plan my giving on an annual basis. I would like to make tax-deductible donations as much as possible. Is there an arrangement in place whereby donations to OpenStreetMap.us will pass through to OpenStreetMap.org?

I’m not an official of either organisation but the answer is going to be that there is no such arrangement.

You can naturally donate to both organisations separately. Note that donations to the OSMF are not tax deductible (nowhere).

Hello!

(putting my OpenStreetMap US board member hat on)

OpenStreetMap US (a local chapter, but independent org) and the OpenStreetMap Foundation (global entity) do not currently have any mechanism to do pass through of fund etc. It’s best to think of the organizations as having a similar goal but with complimentary focus.

The Foundation maintains the rights to the data and is responsible for the health and accessibility of the site, they run the global State of the Map conference etc.

We over at OpenStreetMap US support a wide range of projects and tools that compliment the overall goal of creating useful open map data as well as running our own “local” State of the Map conference. We also function at the fiduciary entity for several projects, so if you’re interested specifically in, for example, OpenHistoricalMap, we do the payment processing and paperwork in partnership with those folks.

There’s a million things to do and I am always happy to talk to folks about all of our projects, plans, and schemes. Definitely reach out if you have any questions!
