Hi there. Only discovered OSM three hours ago and had a shot at recording a trace which I did on my phone and uploaded as Private first and then Public when I couldn’t see it on the map. Still can’t. I can see the uploads both showing on the website as uploaded traces but they don’t appear on the map.

An upoaded GPS-trace does not autimatically become a track in OSM, visible on the standard map. If you want it to become a track, you have to start the editor and manually draw the track according to your GPS-trace. If you have not done that before, run the built-in tutorial first and have a look at the beginners guide: LearnOSM and Beginners' guide - OpenStreetMap Wiki.
It’s quite simple, just give it a try and have fun!

But here all the trip was on existing highway=* in OSM ;-).

Hi, you have to enable Public GPS Traces via the Map Layers menu on the OpenStreetMap page. All public GPS traces are then shown.
