Hello! I am writing in the Danish OSM forum to propose a change in how we handle the administrative divisions of the Faroe Islands. Currently we only display the traditional regions (sysla) as admin level 4 subareas and we completely lack the municipalities (kommuner). This is especially problematic because the traditional regions hold pretty much no political importance in the governance of the Faroes, while the municipalities are considered the main administrative division of the islands on a political level. Therefore, I propose to scrap the traditional sysla and add the municipalities, for example on admin level 6.
I will have a go since there is no response in the Danish forum: OSM is supposed to contain municipalities, so just go ahead and add them. Admin level 7 is used in Denmark, Sweden and Norway for municipalities, and in many other countries.
It would make sense to keep sysla’s, I think, as they still exist as such. Their current admin level of 4 is very high considering their size (all of Scotland and large Danish regions are at that level). I think admin level 6 would be more appropriate, which is roughly where old Danish and Norwegian sysla’s would go if they still existed (given their relative size and importance).
Hi, thanks for responding! I was thinking of retagging the sysla’s with “boundary=statistical”, as these are afaik mostly used only for statistical purposes. I will do that + add the municipalities on admin level 7 in the next couple of days. If anybody then has any objections to that, I can refer back to this discussion.
