Extracting map data for creating model railway layout

I am starting to create a model railway layout that will cover the Queensland Rail Southern Line from Warwick to the border with New South Wales at Wallangarra and continuing along the defunct Main Northern Line to Armidale in NSW. Most of the line is still available on OpenStreetMap and the rest can be fudged from hints left in OSM other sources and a bit of fudging.

Its been about 10 years since I last worked with OSM and my memory of how to extract the data that I want. At that time my focus was to illustrate the wanderings of my ancestors throughout Brittian, India & Australia.

Sounds like fun!

It’s either going to be a very big layout, or you’re going to squish things up a bit!

Sadly, these days, there’s not much left south of the Border

Not sure how much data there is still in OpenStreetMap, I had a look but OpenHistoricalMap had railway data for New South Wales but not for Queensland so once you found the data, upload it to OHM ;-)

Do you know if the railway data has been ever in OpenStreetMap? If so you could retrieve that old data.

For extracting the data I would start with railway relation, for example:

But checking the Southern railway line I see there is no relation (yet). Instead I would use Overpass to get all OSM ways tagged with wikidata=Q7570711. I see the line in intact between Warwick and Jennings.

It appears that the Southern End of the Queensland Southern Line that was destroyed in the bush fires of 2010? that ravish most of the East Coast about 2010ish still exists in OSM but most of the NSW Main Northern Line north of Armidale was removed some time ago, except for a few areas that appear as abandoned.
I’ll give Overpass a try, Hopefully it isn’t as user hostile as JOSM.
Thanks
