You’ve found the OpenStreetMap Events thread! This is the place for updates and reminders for State of the Map US, Mapping USA, Mappy Hours, and various one-off events! The OSM US team will post info about registration deadlines, scholarship possibilities, call for proposal due dates, and the like. Please reply to posts with any feedback or questions!

February Updates:

State of the Map US (June 19-21, Boston)

Local Chapters and Communities Congress 2025 (March 15, virtual)

  • This free annual event convenes both official chapters of the OSM Foundation and various community groups to share stories, resources, and knowledge. Registration is now open!

Mapping USA

March Updates:

:lobster: State of the Map US (June 19-21, Boston)

  • The deadline to submit a poster session idea has been extended to April 18th at noon EDT! Anyone is welcome to submit their cool map, research using OSM, local community poster, or personal project, we’d love to see your proposal!
  • The program is now live! Preview speakers and session times here.
  • One day tickets are now available! Register on the conference website.

:cherry_blossom: FedGeoDay (April 22 & 23, DC)

  • Join nonprofits, government agencies, and technology firms to talk all things Open Geospatial Ecosystems at FedGeoDay 2025 (that’s open source software, open/collaborative mapping, open science challenges, and open engagements).
  • Registration is free for .gov, .mil, .org, and .edu emails!

April Updates:

:lobster: State of the Map US (June 19-21, Boston)

  • The deadline to submit a poster session idea closes this Friday, April 18th at noon Eastern!
  • Check out the most recent update email blast to get the details on social events each night of the conference! Sign up to receive those email updates here.
    • Thursday night - welcome social at the Foundry
    • Friday night - Boston Harbor boat cruise and scavenger hunt
    • Saturday night - OSM US’s 15th birthday party at the Hyatt :birthday:

:computer: OSM US & WiGIS Mappy Hour (April 16 at 8:00pm Eastern)

  • Join us for a unique Mappy Hour and learn from our friends at Women in GIS Northeast and connect with women in the geospatial field!
  • We’re hoping to foster a comfortable environment for folks to discuss common barriers they face in their careers, so this Mappy Hour is reserved for those who identify as women and other marginalized gender identities. Registration is free.

:cherry_blossom: FedGeoDay is April 22 & 23 in Washington, DC. Registration is free for .gov, .mil, .org, and .edu emails!

May Updates:

:lobster: State of the Map US (June 19-21, Boston)

  • We’re only 38 days away from SotM US 2025! Get your one day, general admission, professional, or nonprofit/academic tickets here.
  • OSM US recently launched a Public Service Fund to award conference scholarships to current and past government employees who have been affected by recent funding and staffing cuts. Once a significant portion of the goal is reached, we’ll open scholarship applications. Any remaining funds will go towards the operational costs of SotM US.

:computer: OSM & Geography’s 5 Themes Mappy Hour (May 21st at 8:00pm Eastern)

  • For May’s Mappy Hour, Professor Bill Wetherholt will talk about using OSM to teach Geography’s 5 themes with an OSMCha demo from OSM US Software Engineer Jake Low. All are welcome, especially educators and students interested in bringing OSM to their classrooms. Registration is free!

June Updates:

  • SotM US kicks off this Thursday! There’s still time to grab tickets, and swag is now live on the OSM US website in case you can’t make it to Boston (or just want more clothing with Captain Kraken on it).

:computer: Let’s Map Some Sidewalks Mappy Hour (July 30th at 8:00pm Eastern)

  • Join members of the Pedestrian Working Group on Zoom to discuss their in-progress pedestrian infrastructure mapping schema and learn how to map some sidewalks! :children_crossing: Mappers of all experience levels are welcome, and registration is free.

  • That crisp fall air means it’s almost time for Mapping USA 2026, OpenStreetMap US’s free annual virtual conference! Here’s what you need to know:
    • Submit a proposal for a talk, workshop, mapping session, or birds of a feather discussion now through November 24th at 5:00pm EST.
    • Register at this link (if you aren’t an OpenStreetMap US member, a $10 donation is encouraged)
    • Mark your calendars for January 30th and 31st!

  • A recording of last week’s Mappy Hour is now on the OSM US Youtube channel.

October Updates:

:oncoming_bus: Mapping USA (January 30-31, online)

  • There’s less than one month left to submit a session proposal for Mapping USA 2026! The Call for Proposals closes on November 24th at 5:00pm EST, and there’s still room for 5 minute talks, 10 minute talks, workshops, birds of a feathers, and more in the schedule.

:laptop: Mappy Hour: Sidewalk Mapping Pt. 2 (November 19, online)

  • The OSM US Pedestrian Working Group will lead another night of sidewalk mapping in mid-November. This will be the last Mappy Hour of 2025!
  • You’re welcome to join with an existing mapping question or no prior experience – we’ll have breakout rooms for beginner and intermediate/advanced mappers. Register here.

:globe_showing_europe_africa: OSM Geoweek (November 17-22, everywhere)

  • OSM Geoweek is a global celebration of collaborative mapping and all-things OSM! If you’re hosting an event during the week, you’re invited to add a pin to the OSM Geoweek globe on the OSM US website.

Special Update:

:oncoming_bus: Mapping USA (January 30-31, online)

It’s your last weekend to get a session proposal in for Mapping USA! There’s room on the schedule for 5 and 10 minute talks on Friday, and 1 hour blocks for mapathons, birds of a feather sessions, workshops, and more on Saturday. We’re hoping to showcase a wide variety of perspectives, from newcomers sharing their experience with OpenStreetMap to mapping veterans passing along their tips and tricks. All are welcome to present, and attendance is free!

Submit your proposal here, the form closes on Monday, November 24th at 5:00pm EST.

  • Join the OSM US Board and staff to talk all things 2026 Board Elections and answer any questions about OSM US.
  • To join the Member Town Hall, you must be an individual member of OSM US at any tier. Register for the event here.

  • The Call for Proposals for Mapping USA 2026 closed yesterday, November 24th. Thanks to everyone who submitted a session, we’ll get back to you in early December.
  • Registration is still open (and free!)
