Today, I would like to announce a series of new projects focused on enhancing OpenStreetMap data in “Empty Spain” (España Vacía). We’re targeting underrepresented areas, specifically focusing on mapping empty villages and buildings in these regions.
To facilitate this effort, we’ve created five MapRoulette challenges:
Data Sources: Please utilize community-recommended data sources, as they may vary depending on the specific location.
False Positives: If you encounter any false positives, please mark them as “Not an Issue” within MapRoulette.
Building Challenges: The building challenges highlight the centroid areas of missing buildings. Please note that other surrounding buildings may also be missing and should be added if found.
We highly value your feedback and suggestions for improvements. If you have any questions or require assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
P.S. The term “Empty Spain” (España Vacía) is used solely for content identification purposes and is not intended to cause any confusion or offense.
Best regards,
Salim, TomTom
Falsos positivos: Si encuentran falsos positivos, márquenlos como “Not an Issue” en MapRoulette.
Is the intention here to encourage the import of Cadastral data? I don’t see any mention of the Cadastre in the task description.
Having done a little bit myself many years ago, I would say that importing cadastral data is quite complex, requiring significant familiarity with JOSM, and not really the “normal” difficulty level suggested here.
Thank you @alan_gr for the feedback. I’ll take the following actions:
Consult with the team to reassess the Cadastre as a reference source for identifying completely missing buildings in the four target regions of Spain if possible.
Or maybe to indicate that the need for now is Prioritize editing important buildings for quick gains before expanding to the full Cadastre import to then encourage mappers to probably see the magnitude of missing feature/s.
Explore the possibility of pinpointing missing buildings using the Cadastre data as a comparative source if possible spatially.
Hi Salim and Alan,
The situation is indeed quite complex. There is not enough community in these areas (because of their low population density). Therefore, buildings (and any other data) don’t get mapped.
We have the permit to use the Cadastre data and import it, but the importing process is quite complex, and there are not enough people interested in improving the situation.
Any proposal to draw buildings in a challenge is not well received, as we have the permit to import. However, if the import is painfully slow and complex, maybe it is better to have some buildings, even if they are not perfect (Cadastre data is not perfect either), than nothing at all.
Do we keep holding building mapping because of hopes of a “perfect” future, or are we content with an “imperfect” improvement to get the ball rolling?
In a win-win situation, I would say that the Cadastre import should be revamped and made easier, but that also requires effort, resources, and time. Meanwhile, I would support getting the ball rolling, even if imperfectly.
Perhaps it is. I have certainly been put off mapping buildings in villages by the complexity of the import process. I think it’s mainly the initial step of preparing a municipality that is the blocker - the amount of work for a rural municipality with maybe a few hundred houses seems out of proportion.
But it would need good communication and consensus. It would be unfair to MapRoulette contributors to ask them to trace outlines if they then get changeset comments telling them they should be importing data.
I think the MapRoulette challenge would still need more guidance even if it is agreed that tracing buildings is OK. For example, should mappers prioritise Catastro or PNOA backgrounds for tracing? A typical MapRoulette mapper might assume the 1st one that appears in ID is the one to use.
@Robot8A, you make a good point. I’d suggest maybe a start by focusing on mapping a few key central buildings in towns and villages that are currently lacking data? or do you prefer waiting for full imports? I can coordinate with our experienced editors to provide support to the Spanish community at one stage for editing and validation of needed.
