Elevation / altitude data

I’m looking for the elevation data in OSM.

I want to import the data into Q-Gis, but i don’t know how to extract only the elevation data.

Doen anyone know how to do this?

Elevation information within OSM data is fairly rare and totally unsuitable in case you want contour lines to be displayed. Usually these are generated using data from other sources, e.g. SRTM or sometimes ASTER.

I’ve successfully imported the latter into QGIS (the very first few steps here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:G0ldfish/Garmin_maps_from_ASTER_data)), but SRTM is more common and without lincense restrictions.
