Edited coastline imports to QGIS as points instead of lines - problem

Hi,
Having made some edits to the some of coastline in NW Ireland (moved existing vertices and add new nodes)
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=53.89 … 5&layers=M
I then exported XML for the same area and imported the data into QGIS 1.8 using the OSM plugin. The problem is the edited ways are imported as points instead of lines. The adjoining ways are imported as lines.
Please can someone suggest what might be the problem and how I can fix it.
The coastline editing seems ok - another OSM user checked for me and I had a look on http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/?view=coastline

Looks like its the same problem as this:
https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/21078/my-lines-and-polygons-have-turned-to-nodes-when-exported-as-osm-xml-data-and-imported-into-qgis
http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/52764/qgis-openstreetmap-plugin-misbehaviour

Its seems its because the QGIS OSM plugin is outdated, and doesn’t support 64-bit IDs.

There are alternative ways of getting OSM data into QGIS, which should avoid this problem. See https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/21088/what-is-the-best-way-to-use-osm-data-in-qgis
