I am currently developing a site that will combine books and places. Making it possible to link to an ISBN of a book and folks can then see where they can buy the book. The aim is to push people to buy local instead of the big international chains. And to use your local library.
Example:
I will also fetch OSM opening times for stores that already exist. But if a datapoint is wrong, I want to link folks to an easy and understandable way to quickly modify the store data.
What is the best site for that? It should be beautiful and dead easy to use. I know the time format is kinda complex. But maybe there is a page that focues on store entity editing? It needs to be a website, not an app. I don’t want to link to apps from within the website.
As I said: no app please . I want people who see the data on my site to have a “edit” link that directly goes to a nice UI for editing those. And I cannot do that if that is an app.
The “best” way I know of on a website is mapcomplete.org/, most probably mapcomplete.org/libraries.html
Your users will need an OSM account for that anyways, so linking to an editor app is not a bad alternative in my opinion.
So this is actually a problem that needs a solution, hm? A nice and beautiful page that makes it easy for regular non osm nerds to enter store data? If there is nothing that fits this, I am willing to help creating this.
It would “probably” work for you to link directly to Add an OSM Note New Note | OpenStreetMap ?, but there are absolutely no guarantees of just when that info may actually be added / updated in OSM
With 10 million registered users out of a global population of 8.2 billion, roughly 1 in 820 people are registered.
For my own country only 1 in the 100.000 was active last month.
So do not overengineer things, just make a contact button for people to contact you with information on how to correct the opening times and see what that gives.
You could als add a note that the opening hours are based on OpenStreetMap data, that way:
The few people that know OSM can edit the opening hours themselves
People with the “right” mindset will be pointed to OpenStreetMap
Crediting OpenStreetMap always a good thing to do ;-)
OSMyBiz looks like it might be a good fit, but the login does not work. Will try to figure out why.
And yes, people need a OSM login, but if only 1 in 800 folks who visit a site do it, it is enough for me. Sadly I am not in a position to be able to do all the editing myself. I prefer to sent people to a place where they can help themselves.
Do you know how easy it is to change the opening hours on google maps? I am searching the same for OSM data. I am sure the easy opening hour cases can be done that way. I totally understand that there are cases where a simple inpuut form will not fit the opening hours of a place that is rather wild with them. But having a 80% solution is better than not having it.
Known and actually fixed problem, however there are some organisational issues that have stopped the fix from being deployed. All I can say right now is “we’re working on it and hopefully will have a solution in not all too long”.
I actually don’t really know why people haven’t caught on what we have done in Vespucci a longish time ago 13.1 Release notes - Vespucci Given that most of the time there are customary opening hours for both the region and type of business and adding opening hours can be reduced to applying and appropriate template and any necessary small adjustments.
Maybe because the opening hours templates it offers aren’t useful? As a test I’ve just tried editimg a bar, and “weekdays with lunch break” is the top option. There is no mention of region specific (and beyond postboxes POI-specific) choices.
Those are just the pre-defined templates, the whole point is that you can add your own: Preferences - Vespucci If you have useful suggestions for templates that should be added to the pre-defined ones be my guest.
PS: to create a new template, select “Save to template …” in the OH Editor. See Opening hours - Vespucci
That is not how stats work, I guess from website visitors to people that want to change the opening hours is way less than 1 to 1000. My guess is that such a contact button will only (valid) trigger less than three times per year.
No, I do not know but I know how to find things and saw that you can make a suggestion to update opening hours. Still something needs to verified things (how are you going to do that?) or you need a business account and you need to be logged in on that business account, go Business information, select contact and scroll to hours and edit that.
I tend to agree with this, and the rest of emvee’s points.
For a while one of my major bugbears was a rash of poor-quality notes all over the UK from onosm.org. The two main problems were
very badly placed notes - either people didn’t zoom in far enough, or didn’t appreciate the need for accuracy, or used their inaccurate touchscreen, or thought the address search was good when it is rubbish (I’m speculating - I haven’t tested it)
hopelessly vague information, long on marketing copy and short on taggable info
So I suspect there is an inverse relationship between ease of adding to the map and quality of data received.
I do agree that for something very bounded, like opening hours, we could do with a system to encourage edits from people who don’t want to go through the whole OSM learning curve.
fwiw I’m contemplating building something based on FixMyStreet (demo on YouTube) to allow non-mappers to add mosques. It has a very good map interface, followed by a radio-button questionnaire, which I hope can put guardrails round novice editors. MapComplete is more complex, which discourages engagement.
If you click on “suggest an edit” and login, you directly do the changes. And the UI is exactly what I wanted it to be.
I am not sure where the fear for "people editing the page” is coming from, but I don’t think this will be a huge issue. I mean OSM for sure had problems with people defacing, lets say, russian embassies, or abortion clinics…this little “we let people edit opening hours” should not bring the osm to collapse .
It has been the pc mantra for at least 15 years that we need to concentrate on making it easier to edit osm, and undoubtedly it has never been as easy as just right now.
But it has long outstripped the point at which it actually had a noticeable positive effect.
Yes it is exactly what we’ve had a dozen times before. Anonymous notes can’t be acted on without verification, more detail doesn’t make them more trustworthy.
