E20 at the Öresund toll plaza: local tagging guidance

Hi everyone,

I’d appreciate some local guidance on how to classify the E20 through the Öresund toll plaza near Malmö.

The road is currently mapped as highway=motorway (at least for the left lane at the plaza and road before and after).

However, looking at the area more closely, there is an end-of-motorway sign before the toll plaza (See in Mapillary direction E-W / W-E) and a start-of-motorway sign after (See in Mapillary direction E-W / W-E) it in both directions. Trafikverket’s NVDB motorway layer also appears to be interrupted through this section.

How would this be interpreted in Sweden for OSM classification? Would the signs affect the highway classification through the toll area, or would the E20 generally remain mapped as a motorway because of its function and continuity (which refer also to this section of the wiki)?

I’d also be interested in any similar examples elsewhere in the country. I could not find explicit guidance in the Swedish OSM wiki or the forum, so links to relevant documentation or previous discussions would be much appreciated.

Location: 55.566387, 12.913552

Thanks in advance for your help!

Generally motorways require the motorway sign in Sweden and those signed with it should be highway=motorway and others should not. However, on- and off-ramps with highway=motorway_link aren’t commonly turned into something else just because there’s an “end of motorway” sign 100 m before the ramp ends into a roundabout or intersection, continuity is more important in that case.

In this instance, it is the only real toll plaza on Swedish territory and it forms part of a continuous motorway, so for all intents and purposes it is a motorway and functions as a motorway. Due to legal reasons regarding what laws apply specifically on a motorway and how motorways can be designed, the toll plaza itself isn’t signed as one.

I would keep it as a motorway.
