The OSM community forum does not usually include obituaries but this one struck me as noteworthy. OSM-based maps coupled with GPS technology on various brands of GPS receivers and smart phones have revolutionized navigation, particularly in countries the major for-profit mapmakers either do not or cannot serve (in my case, think Turkmenistan!) May Dr. West rest in peace, and may we periodically recall the unsung researchers who made this technology possible. It made my life, and lives of many others, vastly easier in Turkmenistan and continues to make my life easier here in the United States.
