1/I have added a hamlet to the map above MICHALIANA , but it doesn’t seem to show on any zoom level but lots of other hamlets by other people do. I checked the tags and It seems ok but if I made an error can you let me know what I did wrong and why it doesn’t show.
2/I have seen various ways of tagging a hamlet. some do it by adding the houses in the general area as “residential area,” and then making a point as “Hamlet” is this the “correct” way to do it?
I have quite a few hamlets to adding to this rather barren area of the map, so it would be a help to be sure that I am adding them correctly and that they will be displayed afterwards for users of the map. Thanks
You added an area, not a node (point). The generally suggested way is to map hamlets/villages etc as nodes. For the areas themselves, that’s preferably the landuse=residential. I’m fixing this one right now.
It is a matter of debate, as the unforgotten monster thread in the osm-carto repo shows.
You can use a place=hamlet area and that will work as expected, what you loose with that is good “center” of the place information except if you can live with duplicate labels (and add an additional node).

For places where they border each other, for sure the area is needed there, to show where exactly each place ends, when the boundaries are known exactly and not vague. For places like this, a village on its own, isn’t really needed imo. Could be added yes, as additional tags.

thank you, that is useful. Any idea why in the standard map view the the Village name is not displayed, or does it display in the standard OSM view on your computer thanks
Did a quick read on some spots, not certain about specific areas, but for sure a relation would help encapsulate the extent of a place. Still, most probably as additional tags on the areas, and not areas of just place=* being the prevalent one.

Pretty much as the link Simon gave, it’s just how OSM Carto, the standard layer of OSM, shows it. In other words, it won’t render areas with just place=* tagged.
I saw the areas you mapped in the edit view.
