Does "authorized access only" infer a `private` or `permit` access restriction?

For example would the following be considered motor_vehicle=private + atv=no + motorcycle=no?

Personally, I’d just stick with motor_vehicle=private, without specifying atv / motorbike, as the sign doesn’t say that.

The sign states “No Quads/Dirt Bikes” at the bottom. Or are you inferring that you wouldn’t classify a quad as an ATV nor a dirt bike a motorcycle?

To answer the question about permit, in OSM permit is used in cases where “permit is ordinarily granted” (per the table in Key:access - OpenStreetMap Wiki) so I guess the tagging would depend on how easy it is have a vehicle authorized. If Joe Random in their RAV4 rolls up from the city and they phone someone and are told OK, it’s likely permit. If it’s something like staff-and-contractors only, it’s likely private.

Sorry, didn’t see that!

Yep, in that case, what you said would be right.

“Authorized Vehicles” would mean vehicle=* instead of motor_vehicle=*, wouldn’t it?

Apart from that, “Authorized” heavily implies to me “individual permission”, i.e. not routinely granted. So private seems more fitting.
Jarek’s answer gives a more complete overview.

I’m reading “Vehicles” as to include nonmotorized vehicular conveyances, such as bicycles and other human powered machines. That’d be vehicle=private, atv=no
