I’m especially interested in disused stations and halts. Why aren’t they rendered?
If we add disused=yes tag, then they are rendered, although faded. And that’s how it should be.

There should be also disused:railway=station (or ‘halt’ or anything else) tag attached.
After adding the second tag, the structure is not rendered at all, but it still exist and it has impact on the landscape.

Not everything is rendered on the ‘Standard’ map. It would look like a dog’s dinner if absolutely everything were crammed on there. However, there are many other renderings and you are of course free to set up your own.

But the disused=yes objects are rendered !!
However, when one adds the second tag disused:xxx=yyy (following the guidelines) they disappear.
You can report problems with the Standard openstreetmap.org rendering on Trac. Choose the component “mapnik”. https://trac.openstreetmap.org/
It would help if you gave some links to examples of things that do / don’t render correctly.
Mapnik (or the used stylesheet) most probably just ignores the disused tag. You can create a ticket for it as already mentioned by Vclaw, but if you really want anything to happen try creating a patch. There are hundreds of other feature requests, some of them several years old.
