I’m new to OSM editing. I wish to know how to edit areas claimed by two nations. In this case, OSM only shows the Canadian claim on MSI and not the American one. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi @glassheartbreaker and welcome here.
It’s as simple as it is in this case. Leave it as it is, because this island is part of both countries in OpenStreetMap:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/148838#map=11/44.5078/-67.0008
and
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/1428125#map=9/44.624/-66.698
The borderlines of Canada and the United States do not overlap there, but the areas of both countries do overlap. There is an relation of this disputed territory: Relation: Machias Seal Island Disputed Territory (12947494) | OpenStreetMap
The Wiki Disputed territories - OpenStreetMap Wiki states this just the other way 'round.
For what it’s worth, the wiki has stated “Currently rendered as United States (Maine) territory, despite only Canadians staying on the island.” since 2021 (Disputed territories: Difference between revisions - OpenStreetMap Wiki). The text may have been correct when added, and data or rendering may have changed since then (or maybe Maine maritime borders changed?).
Current rendering seems fine to me, it shows both the claimed borders, and the Canadian administrative boundary (Way: 1412740464 | OpenStreetMap) which makes sense if Canada is currently administering it.
