Displaying markers using text layers

Using a text layer appears to be a effective way of adding multiple markers to a map, which would suit my purposes very well.

However, I can not get even the Openlayers POI layer example (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Openlayers_POI_layer_example) to work properly. When implemented, exactly as per the example, the text layer fails to display any marker and, whilst active, causes map scrolling to become eratic.

Does any body know how these problems can be corrected, or of any working examples of the use of text layers in the creation of markers?

Same prob. I’ll be watching for the answer.
Is there any other way to add multiple markers?
Like using an array?

I am not an expert at all in this, but I copied and tweaked the examples to make this work.
