Eher daran, dass sie kein tragfähiges Geschäftsmodel gefunden haben um überhaupt Umsatz zu generieren (Strasseninventar etc. sprich das was sie ursprünglich machen wollten, war schon zum Zeitpunkt als sie angefangen haben ein schon langes besetzter Markt in dem sie nicht wirklich konkurrenzfähig waren).

In den aktuellen OSM-Weekly stand was von einer Panoramax-App. Im Moment ist dort fest verdrahtet, dass die auf den französischen Server hochläd, wenn ich das richtig sehe. Sollte es irgendwann eine deutsche Instanz geben, würde die dann auch mit der App gehen? Oder bräuchte es dann eine eigene App?
Nein, man kann den Server auswählen. Aktuell gibt es aber nur zwei (französische) zur Auswahl.
Allerdings wird man anscheinend nur beim ersten Mal gefragt, welchen Server man verwenden möchte. Ich habe jedenfalls keine Möglichkeit gefunden den Server später zu wechseln.

Yes, it would work with the same apps, that is the idea. But one would have to ask in Issues · Panoramax / Clients / Mobile app · GitLab for new server to be added, and then the next version of the app would have it. The same process would be for alternative Baba mobile app.
I’m pretty sure that the persons who would set up the German panoramax server would handle all that work, so it would be transparent to the users.
Of course using CLI client would work right away without any changes, as one has to specify URL manually there (instead of choosing from the list).
Perhaps that feature could be suggested? I’m currently using alternative Baba mobile app, and it has “logout” button, so one logout and log in again to different server. As a workaround - one could always uninstall / reinstall the app to choose the servers again, nothing of data is lost if uploaded to the existing servers beforehand (you just need to login again)

The meta catalog can provide the list of known instances. It is simpler for an app or web site/app to get an up-to-date list of instance with logo, description, read/write status, etc

An gebrauchte Server komme ich prinzipiell über die Arbeit regelmäßig heran, aber ich glaube von den Spezifikationen helfen die nicht so wirklich weiter 
Zeitnah (einige Wochen) fliegen bei uns u.a. die folgenden Server raus:
- 1x HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 2HE: 2x Intel Xeon E5-2660v3, 128GB RAM, 2x 600GB HDD
- 3x Oracle Server X5-2 1HE, 2x Intel Xeon E5-2699v3, 768GB RAM, 4x 600GB HDD
- 2x HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 2HE, Intel CPU, 64GB RAM, 3x 300GB HDD
Irgendwann dieses Jahr kommt noch eine HPE 3PAR dazu, da weiß ich aber nicht, ob man das Ding ohne gültige Lizenz zum Laufen kriegt:
- HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8200 mit 5 Shelfs, insg 12 HE, 12x 1,9TB SSD, 132x 1,2TB HDD → 168TB gesamt

The HPE servers are good enough.
OSMFR server is a Dell R7910 quite similar to the gen9/10 (E5 v4)
Best choice is servers with LFF bays for storage 3.5 disks and some pcie slot to add NVMe SSD fir the database.
Sadly alle those servers have only 2,5" slots
Same for our R7910, but I added a SAS HBA and a storage self with LFF (60 SAS/SATA bays).
You have one part of the needed hardware, that’s better than nothing at all !

Are we talking about api.openstreetmap.xyz here, (already) providing a list of instances? Or just some future idea?
I.e. are you saying that app need not have a list of instances hardcoded, but can query the API metacatalog (so any new instance would become available to the app “automagically”, even if the app didn’t have any update but just fetched fresh list from API)? That would certainly be nice for new instances if it could work that way!

A new instance can be referenced through a simple CSV config file on the metacatalog, and uses all metadata sent by the instance itself on its main route (for example https://panoramax.openstreetmap.fr/api/configuration ). That’s already used by the project website https://panoramax.fr to do its listing of instances.

weiß jemand ob es möglich sein wird die vorhandenem D-A-CH Daten (Fotos) von panoramax.xyz zu einer deutschen Instanz zu migrieren?
Das Panoramax Kommandozeilen-Tool hat eine Funktion um Sequenzen von einer Instanz zu einer anderen zu laden: Available commands - Panoramax - Docs
Über die anderen API-Suchbefehle kann man entsprechende Sequenzen auch finden. Technisch geht das also jetzt schon mehr oder weniger einfach denke ich.
