Correcting inconsistent cuisine tag values

I recently tagged an uyghur restaurant in my city:

I used cuisine=uyghur. Using taginfo, I found that many other writings of this type of cuisine are in use, including:

  • uighur
  • uigur
  • uygur
  • Uyghur (capitalized)
  • uyghur_cuisine
  • uyghur/asian

Wikipedia uses the roman writing with “y” instead of “i”: Uyghur cuisine - Wikipedia

So my questions are:

  1. Is it OK to just change the tag values of other nodes to my - seemingly more common - writing?
  2. Does the forward-slash in uyghur/asian have special meaning? Should this not be uyghur;asian?
  3. Is capitalization revelant? It seems like the convention is lowercase.
  4. Key:cuisine - OpenStreetMap Wiki contains a table of “commonly used values”. Should I add uyghur there? Or is it not “common” enough? Over all forms of writings, there are at least 44 instance, though probably not much more.

cuisine=uyghur seems with 19+ the most used value at the moment Search results | OpenStreetMap Taginfo

“;” is an “and” that means both cuisines uyghur and asian (or foot=pizza;pasta)
Looking into the wiki page there are no capital letters and no slashes

Yes, if you want to go through & fix them all, please do so!

Please add a comment though to say that you’re correcting a typo.

One caveat in some cases (which likely won’t be an issue here) is to check that there are no data consumers for the spellings you’re correcting from in taginfo - just search taginfo for the tag and click the “projects” tab.

It’s unlikely, but supposing there was a consumer of the other spelling and not of the spelling you are changing it to, you’d want to warn them.
