Exactly that’s the point. Just removing Skype doesn’t make our data any better. Check on the POI in general, update it and set check_date*:* if it still exist.

I don’t know. Maybe they added a WhatsApp number or Discord channel? I’m not sure how common that is, but I also don’t know of many places that were reachable through Skype…
If in practice that turns out to be extremely rare that could be an argument in favor of just mass deleting the tags. At least some editors seem to think it’s a potentially valuable signal though, going by some of the other replies in this thread.
I’ve deleted the tag from every object in Ireland and checked the rest of their details.
There was 3 of them.

I’ve deleted it from the only object that had it in Greece, which was apparently added 7 months ago, after Skype closed, because the website of that object still references their Skype ID (not phone number). But since Skype can’t be used anymore, there’s no reason for that to be mapped, even if it’s still mentioned elsewhere (most probable reason they forgot to update their own info, pretty common)
“contact:skype” is key key whose status is “in use”, which means that mappers use it or that you can still find it on the map. Here’s a link to the status in the wiki:

It is not approved yet, and I guess it will never be.
Feel free to delete the tag and add the reason for the tag deletion.
You can also start a deprecation process.
Taginfo says so because of the Spanish page. In English, there’s a redirect to the main contact:*=* tagging scheme, which is in use generally, but no dedicated status for this particular subkey. I marked it deprecated in the data item.
