The drinking fountain is still there, and still very useful as a landmark in a vast area.
So one would hope that hikers would still see it on maps, but with a red X on it or whatever, so they won’t get hopes up as to have a drink.
The worry about not forgetting to remove the out of order status is less worrisome than letting it slide and having map users still expect a drink… More cheery is the hiker who finds a working fountain where a out of order one was marked, than the hiker who finds an out of order fountain where a working one was marked.
Yes, sometimes the Park District doesn’t fix them when notified, because they await some major reconstruction or something. Anyways, that is all much different than “doomed”, or “end of life”, or “water turned off for the winter”.
