Good evening everyone,
I’m having a problem with a mapper on OSM.
The situation is as follows: I added a name to a street (which is known locally by that name), however, this mapper is a city hall employee and reverts my edits, stating that the street is not official and cannot be on OSM because it violates the guidelines.
I reviewed all the guidelines and there is no prohibition against adding the name of a street that is known locally and does not necessarily need to be official.
I have been blocked on 3 accounts because of this; this mapper always reports me. I have tried contacting the OSM administrators, but without success.
I would like help to know if I am violating any guidelines when I indicate and add the name to a street that is not official? I state in the note that the street is not official to make everyone aware.
Furthermore, I would like the contact information of an administrator to verify the issue of my account blocks.
I’m from Brazil, sorry if there were any mistakes in the message.
Some additional context for the people reading:
As they wrote in the block:
Antes de continuar editando, envie um e-mail para data@opensreetmap.org com o assunto Ticket # 2025041810000626
EDIT:
Uhm, I see there’s a typo in the email they wrote you. Contact them at data at openstreetmap dot org.
Hello, I sent the supporting documentation for my edition to the email address provided on June 19, 2025, but I never received a response. I indicated the ticket number provided.
I noticed that email contained a typo, write a new one at data at openstreetmap dot org.
Fiz o reenvio da documentação e informações ao e-mail.
That DWG ticket has had at least 15 emails from the OP here. The person who is dealing with the ticket (who is not me!) currently has a lot on all sides to read through.

If the concern is solely about the name, you may be interested to know that there are some tags, such as loc_name, that could be used for “names which everyone uses” but are never found in any official database.
In your edits, you did not just add a name but you also changed the highway type. And after each block, you created a new account to redo the same edit, which falsely gives the impression that multiple people are pushing for that name and road type change. Discussing the issue with the other mapper, by replying to changeset comments, would have been better. ![]()
Yes, my intention is to contribute to including the locally known street name, so I’ve added several notes stating that the street is not officially recognized. However, the mapper always reverts my changes. There’s no problem in adding it as you indicated, loc_name. As I said, I sent an email to OSM in June 2025, but never received a response, which is why I made the changes. However, the mapper doesn’t accept any changes because it understands that if the street is not officially recognized, it cannot be included on the map; that’s the problem.
Who is José Maurer?
You have been asked at least 10 times, to provide evidence of what you are claiming, but you have never responded to any DWG messages.

offtopic:
[redacted cause it was not this post on wikipedia, check author reply]
The street was the first resident, who died in 1977, which is why the street is known by that name.
Through which channel was this requested? Because I’ve already sent it by email about 10 times and never received a response. Please provide the email address so I can immediately forward all the evidence I have.
@Lunardi10 the text formatting you are using makes what you write unnecessarily difficult to read.
I’ve edited the posts to remove that so that those posts are visible everywhere (including mobile)
There were no replies to messages such as those on this changeset, but as I mentioned above, there are lots of replies on the DWG ticket mentioned earlier, although the reason why a ticket was created was mainly due to behaviour like:
You shouldn’t create accounts just to evade blocks; doing that will just make you look like you are in the wrong.
I’m not involved in account issues or dispute resolution in any way. I decided to look at the way in question (via Google Maps and Street View) from a completely neutral position.
The red road should be highway=service. It is not a residential road. It is definitely not two lanes, as I see it has been tagged in past versions. From what I see on Street View, calling the surface compacted is being generous, I would be inclined to call it dirt. Some mappers may consider the red road to be a pipestem driveway (highway=service + service=driveway + driveway=pipestem), but I do not. Not in its current configuration and state.
Blue 1, 2, and 3 should be higway=service + service=driveway, with 2 and 3 being surface=dirt.
As for the name issue, unless you can provide verifiable sources, you should not use name=Rua José Maurer. Maybe use loc_name=Rua José Maurer. As I am not local to the area I cannot judge whether it meets the loc_name threshold: if I am visiting that neighbourhood and ask a local where Rua José Maurer is, they should know what I am talking about and be able to give me directions.
I appreciate the information and willingness to analyze the situation. I have proof of the street name from my water bill (from the municipality itself) and phone bill. I want to resolve this; I just want to name the street, regardless of whether it’s only with loc_name or another method. I would appreciate it if someone could help me do this. Thank you very much.
I’m Brazilian here, but not involved with the edits. Just to give some perspective:
@Tomio is a long-time OSM mapper, and he’s probably the first one to make his municipality sign a bill on sharing their data to OSM in an official manner.
Looking at Brazilian census data, from 2022, this street has no official name (it says “Rua Sem Denominação”, lit. “Street Without Denomination”).
That being said, if the mapper is saying that street/alley has a name (and can prove it, as said, which I don’t doubt it), it should be in OSM somehow. Using loc_name seems a very plausible solution to me, and everybody gets happy.
Hi Matheus, it’s a pleasure to have a Brazilian in our discussion. Since I’ve had several problems with Tomio, I preferred to speak up here and get some guidance, in order to respect the rules and ensure that the street name is correctly listed in OSM as loc_name. However, I would like the support of an OSM moderator or administrator to do it correctly and avoid future problems. Thank you for your opinion.
It was sent as a direct message to you, then under user name “sventurin” on 20 Feb 2025, suggesting that you actually comment on Tomio’s changeset, and also requesting that you provide us with photographic proof of the street name.
After we received no response from you, that complaint was cancelled.
