I agree, I thing building=data_center is much more sensible than telecom=data_center.

Note that a datacenter frequently consists of multiple buildings – in some designs, the cooling duties are spread between multiple buildings, most will have offices in the same building as the data hall, and the backup generators can either be inside or outside as well as the plethora of power transformers and distribution equipment.

I like the idea of maybe adding in data_centre=<subcategory> where that’s available, for demographics

I could get behind building=industrial data_centre=<subcategory>, especially if it was recognized as applied to building:part with a secondary on building in the rare care a building has a uniform usage.

However, they are typically built in a way that’s distinguishable from non-crypto data centers. It makes me wonder if the community would find it acceptable to add a bit of metadata to record that.

data_centre=crypto_hut?

A crypto hut is a primary component of a cryptocurrency mining data center, characterized by a modular and repeatable all-in-one design rather than a larger integrated building.
