I am hoping someone can help me out. One of my clients is a new construction builder and they just opened a new community. I recently discovered that the entire community and the roads are missing on OSM.
I looked into doing it myself but I fear I will do it incorrectly. Can someone on here help me out with updating OSM to have the new residential roads added.
Let me know what information would be needed to complete such a task. Very Much appreciated.
There are two main ways to add roads to OSM. One is to trace from the aerial imagery in the editor; you may have to hunt through the editorĘĽs image menu (layers icon if youĘĽre using ID) for a layer that is up to date enough to show the roads.
There is another way that works without recent imagery. You can make a GPS trace (there are apps to do this on smartphones) and upload it to OSM, you can then trace over it in an editor.
@MoshiMoshixx, if you reply here with an OSM URL (copied from your browser when you pan and zoom to the area you wish to map), people here might take a look at that exact area, see what aerial / satellite imagery is available that might display (perhaps an early version of?) the residential streets there, and either quickly do the mapping themselves, or offer to give you more guidance if you prefer to do it yourself.
OSM can be and often is a “mentoring” project, I think that’s great! (People learn, level-up their mapping skills, the project grows with more people / more data…). OSM can be and sometimes is a “please do it for me, it’s not a large effort” project, I think that’s good. Emphasis “sometimes.”
This is like “here’s how to fish, you’ll never again go hungry” versus “here’s a fish, have a good supper tonight.”

The community is fairly new they just started building within the last year, most aerial/satellite imagery is not updated yet.
I appreciate and love your analogy and generally I am the teach me to fish type of person. I have attempted to edit the map myself but I could not do anything beyond the straight lines and got frustrated quickly. So I find myself here as the beggar and please give me fish moment.

That site plan is on a Google map so it cannot be used for OSM mapping. You would need a site plan and authorization to use that data on OSM.
I’ve added the roads that are seen on the Esri imagery.
