Building=bunker vs military=bunker

Hey all, tagging question about inconsistency in the wiki pages :

  • Tag:bunker_type=pillbox - OpenStreetMap Wiki is to map WW2 (and thus abandonned) bunker, have to be used a secondary tag of : military=bunker

  • Tag:military=bunker - OpenStreetMap Wiki is said to be used only for still in use military bunker, for abandonned / no more in use, one should use Tag:building=bunker - OpenStreetMap Wiki instead.

    So how are we supposed to map WW2 no more used bunker ? Should it be building=bunker + bunker_type=pillbox, or military=bunker + bunker_type=pillbox ?

    Plus, second question, what if we want to specify that the bunker is a specific type ? It’s the same key to say “WW2 bunker” and “the purpose of the bunker”: Key:bunker_type - OpenStreetMap Wiki . Shouldn’t we deprecate bunker_type=pillbox to be and replace it with a historical tag saying this bunker belongs to WW2 ?

Yes. We have the lifecycle prefix for this, and migrating to that would avoid these issues.

building=bunker can still be used in parallel to the military=bunker tag.

abandoned:*=* Still visible but fallen into serious disrepair and which could only be put back into operation with considerable effort.

A WWII defensive gun emplacement, that’s still there but no longer in use would be abandoned:military=bunker + then either abandoned:bunker_type=pillbox or bunker_type=pillbox (dependfing on the view if sub-tags should also be prefxed).

An active and in-use defensive gun emplacement would then be military=bunker + bunker_type=pillbox.

Note this is my view about how we should apply the tags, but that might not match how it’s documented on the wiki or used.
